bell will not ring when the phone is received
Sources associated with TRAI said that the regulator is planning to hold an open discussion on the issue of the period of ‘ringing the phone to the person being called’ on 14 October. Apart from this, the entire IUC issue will also be discussed. A discussion paper has already been issued for this. It will be decided soon. Airtel and Vodafone Idea have now reduced the time of ringing the bells on their outgoing network to just 25 seconds.
The duration of the ringing of the phone usually ranged from 40 to 45 seconds when the call was received. But now it has been reduced to 25 seconds. The move by Airtel and Vodafone Idea is also aimed at reducing the cost of Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) charged on the time the call is connected. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) unanimously asked the telecom companies involved in stiff competition among themselves to arrive at a solution before reaching any official decision on the interconnect charges.
Interconnect usage charges are paid on services provided by one network to another network. In this, the network through which the call is made pays this fee to the network that reaches the call. Right now its rate is six paise per minute. Airtel has sent a letter to TRAI on 28 September informing them of this decision. At the same time, sources informed that Vodafone Idea has also decided to reduce the period of ringing of the phone in select areas.
Airtel said that it has decided to limit the time the phone rings to 25 seconds. With no clear instructions in this regard from the regulator, the company has no other option left. However, the company has kept this point several times before the regulator.
